Associate Mechanical Design Engineer

Company Background:

United Dynamics is a small business-certified Hub Zone located in Shawnee, Oklahoma. United Dynamics started in 1993 by reverse engineering aerospace parts to help the USG with obsolete parts. This company has an engineering staff capable of designing and reverse engineering numerous types of aerospace parts and solutions. United Dynamics is approved for manufacturing over 168 National Stock Numbers (NSNs). This includes in-house machining capabilities, parts assembly, and testing. United Dynamics has an MRO shop and is approved to overhaul over 53 National Stock Numbers (NSNs). This company manufactures and overhauls aerospace parts for numerous aircraft, including: KC-135, B-52, B1, B2, E3, A-10, F-15, F-16, KC-46, and C-130. United Dynamics history of sales is specifically Department of Defense (DOD) sales.

Position Summary:

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing parts and assemblies for military aircraft, test fixtures for qualification and acceptance testing of parts and assemblies, performing production support to support prototyping through production, collaborating with manufacturing teams, writing technical documentation and reports, and resolving technical issues to ensure seamless production of our products. You will work on a variety of projects, using your technical expertise to drive results and improve processes.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Drawing interpretation of customer prints.
  • Load and revise bills of material (BOMs) in Costpoint (ERP system).
  • Evaluate alternate and substitute parts to support legacy production lines.
  • Revise internal technical documentation to include drawings and test plans/procedures.
  • Take immediate action to support production using redlined drawings.
  • Design mechanical hardware and drawings in SolidWorks with guidance from Senior Engineers.
  • Use FARO arm and DezignWorks software to reverse engineer complex mechanical hardware.
  • Support new design projects through prototype development and testing.
  • Participate in internal and external design reviews and technical interchange meetings with stakeholders.
  • Design, develop, and test all aspects of mechanical components, equipment, and machinery for assigned projects.
  • Work on clean sheet design and reverse engineering projects for a wide variety of aircraft parts and assemblies.
  • Identify continuous improvement projects and present them to management.
  • Support problem resolution throughout the organization.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve obsolescence issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports directly to the Engineering Manager.

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • MUST BE A U.S. CITIZEN
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling and design software for part and assembly design.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on process and quality.

Experience Level:

  • Entry level to two years of experience.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in mechanical design in aerospace or a similar industry.
  • Experience with SolidWorks 3D CAD modeling and design software.
  • Experience with LabVIEW, Arduino, or another software used to run autonomous test programs.
  • Experience in creating detailed engineering drawings in compliance with ASME Y14.100 standards.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with a configuration management tool for managing engineering data and documentation.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials selection, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles.
